Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
